Cvss 3 Severity Score
Description
LibRaw 0.22.0 contains an incorrect numeric conversion vulnerability in LibRaw::parse_tiff_ifd() when processing TIFF tag 0x00fe (NewSubfileType). A specially crafted RAW, TIFF, or DNG file can supply an attacker-controlled NewSubfileType value outside the range of a signed int. The parser converts this value and narrows it to int without performing range validation. This out-of-range conversion triggers undefined behavior, resulting in process termination and denial of service.

Notes
mdeslaur
Per the advisory: "Impact in non-sanitized builds: the out-of-range double→int cast is implementation-defined; on x86-64 GCC/Clang it produces INT_MIN (0x80000000), which is written into newsubfiletype and perturbs the DNG sub-frame selection/classification logic at tiff.cpp:1856–1888 (raw frames can be misclassified/skipped)." In Ubuntu builds with gcc, this does not result in a crash, it just causes raw frames to be skipped or misclassified. This has very little security impact in Ubuntu. Marking priority as low. This was originally fixed here: https://github.com/LibRaw/LibRaw/commit/b41cbbd61951783e0440590dae55411a16185bdf But the fix was subsequently reverted here: https://github.com/LibRaw/LibRaw/commit/dde798dd310f54b97e3ff7e5b07412da3310a2db This is the commit that is mentioned in the revert: https://github.com/LibRaw/LibRaw/commit/f424d396210cc9742988d1af39c1720a2a53b987 but that doesn't cover the use of LONG in the PoC as of 2026-09-29, there does not appear to be a fix from libraw developers for this issue.
